Washington 2010 - The Official Website

Picture
This website details the History Department trip to Washington, DC, from May 21st-25th, 2010.

May 21st

Our 10 hour trip to Gettysburg finished over a nice dinner in town. Tomorrow we are off to the Capital!

May 22nd

We are in our hotel in Rockville - great location (and suites instead of rooms). Today started with our tour of the White House (stunning building - the students got to see the "First Pet" Bo playing in the backyard!) and finished with free time on The Mall - students spent the afternoon visiting the various meseums (Notably the Air & Space, Natural History, American & American Indian). Dinner was spent at the local Rockville Mall, and we are now settling in for the evening.

May 23rd

The morning was spent at Arlington National Cemetary (two people visted graves of family) - over 320,000 soliders are currently buried in this cemetary. Afterwards we were able to secure tickets to the Holocaust Museum - we spent almost three hours looking at the various displays (good preparation for the Holocaust Trip next year). For the rest of the afternoon we gave everyone free time to look around The Mall before heading out to eat together at a nice restaurant in the market District. The weather has been fantastic - only raining when we are indoors!

May 24th

A long day! We started by heading to the National Zoo for the morning - lions, tigers and sloth-bears. After lunch there was free-time at The Mall (some students made their way to the Senate Chamber on Capital Hill) before heading off to the Spy Museum. Dinner was had at Washington Union Station, after which we went on an evening monument tour that included the WWII, Lincoln, Korean, Vietnam and Franklin D. Roosevelt memorials.

May 25th

A tired group arrived at WDHS for 7:30pm after a long day of travel. It was good to be home.

We went to the White House - May 22nd!!

Thanks to the Office of the Vice-President of the United States, as well as some WDHS alumni, we visited the White House on May 22nd.
